Effects of planting date and cultivation method on quality of muskmelon on Penghu

Abstract

 Seven cultivars of muskmelon were planted in spring, summer and fall crop in Penghu area from 1992 to 1993. Two different kinds of cultivated methods such as in field and plastic house were used in
this experiment. The main objective of this experiment was to evaluate the quality of muskmelon under the different of planting dates and cultivated methods.

 The results indicated that cv. Chiu-Me obtained the highest sugar content(12.5Brix)and Me-Shi-Jei had the largest fruit weight(1,081gr) but less sugar content(10.4Brix), when muskmelon were planted in the field condition in spring. Tai-Yang got the highest sugar content(17.2 Brix), Me-Shi-Jei had the largest fruit weight(942.6gr) at plastic house condition in spring. In general, under field condition the fruit weight of summer crop was much heavier than that of spring. Among tested varieties, Chiu-Me had a good performance with the fruit weight (1,967.4gr)and sugar content(11.9Brix). Under simple protect plastic house condition, the fruit weight was heavier in spring (736.5gr) than that in fal (616.3gr),but there was no significant different for sugar content between spring (15.0 Brix) and fall crops (14.7 Brix).
