Effect of Fruit Thinning on Quality and Yield of Cucumber

Abstract

 For improving the quality and yield of cucumber, six different fruit thinning methods were designed, and the variety "Wanchi" was used in this experiment in the summer and autumn of 1993. The preliminary results indicated that in the summer crop, fruit thinning at the fifth node and below of main and lateral culms obtained the highest number and yield of qualified fruits, the treatment without fruit thinning had the lowest number and yield of qualified fruits. In the autumn crop, the effect of fruit thinning on number of qualified fruit yield was similar to that of the summer crop, however, the differences among treatments were not significantly different at 5%of probablity. For the effect of fruit thinning on the quality of cucumber, no significant difference was found for fruit weight and length among different treatments in both the summer and autumn crops. For the diameter and thickness of fruit, the significant differences among treatments were found only in the summer crop.
