Development of the New Rice Variety Kaohsiung 143(1)

Abstract

 The purpose of this study is to improve the yield, rice quality, resisting ability of preharvest spouting and stress of present early-matured rice variety. Kaohsiung 143 was selected from thecross-combination between Taiken 5 and Tainung Yu 82649 in the second crop of 1996. After a series of yield trials, including the regional yield trail conducted throughout the whole island, the experimental results showed that the characters of this variety are higher yield, excellent quality, lower preharvest spouting and panicle blast resistance. Average yield of this variety was 22.0% and 10.8% higher than the check variety Taiken 1 for the first crop and second crop respectively. Kaohsiung 143 also posses erect plan type, good eating quality. Based on these data, we recommended to grow this variety in single and double rice crop area, where grows Japonica rice in Taiwan.
